Sitting in Leland at the mouth of the Carp River is historic Fishtown. The area is comprised of classic fishing shanties preserved and converted to shops and attractions as well as smoke houses and other fishing support areas. A dock runs along the river and provides access to the shanties. There is a dam with a waterfall that dams up the river and creates Lake Leelanau.
The area is maintained by the Fishtown Preservation Society. Fishtown was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. Much preservation activity has been done including lifting and preserving the multiple buildings at the site.
Boats leave from the docks at Fishtown for both fishing trips as well as access to the North and South Manitou Islands. Fishtown today is still an active commercial fishing operation on Lake Michigan. The area is a popular attraction for tourists and is often very busy, especially in the summer months.
There is much to do at and around Fishtown. Shopping, restaurants and beaches are within walking distance. The Falling Waters Lodge sits on the south bank of the river and is a great place to stay. Fishtown and Leland are a Leelanau must-see destination.
